چکیده

The present work analyses climatological variations of Convective Available Potential Energy (CAPE) and Inhibition (CIN) over the eastern India (Odisha, West Bengal Jharkhand) during pre-monsoon season, where thunderstorms are frequent disastrous. utilises European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) reanalysis data: ERA-5 1987-2016, supplemented with information about thunderstorm occurrences region from Meteorological Department (IMD). CAPE CIN values can differentiate days (TD) non-thunderstorm (NTD), favourable conditions convective weather on region, evident by CIN. coastal areas Odisha Bengal, along Jharkhand bordering northern have higher lower values. trend analysis has been performed using non-parametric Mann-Kendall test, which shows an apparent transformation indices time different regions states TD NTD. increasing districts whole 12 UTC NTD cases show a decreasing (both 00 UTC) Bengal. Odisha, whereas, trends positive negative entire state For Jharkhand, both NTD, whereas TD, increasing/decreasing visible. complements observations occurrence to understand potential season.

Why does tropical convective available potential energy (CAPE) increase with warming?

Recent work has produced a theory for tropical convective available potential energy (CAPE) that highlights the Clausius-Clapeyron (CC) scaling of the atmosphere’s saturation deficit as a driver of increases in CAPE with warming. Here we test this so-called “zero-buoyancy” theory for CAPE by modulating the saturation deficit of cloud-resolving simulations of radiative-convective equilibrium in ...

Ocean Convective Available Potential Energy. Part I: Concept and Calculation

Thermobaric convection (type II convection) and thermobaric cabbeling (type III convection) might substantially contribute to vertical mixing, vertical heat transport, and deep-water formation in the World Ocean. However, the extent of this contribution remains poorly constrained. The concept of ocean convective available potential energy (OCAPE), the thermobaric energy source for type II and ty...

Performance Evaluation of Convective Parameterization Schemes of WRF-ARW Model in the Simulation of Pre-monsoon Thunderstorm Events over Kharagpur using STORM Data Sets

Thunderstorms associated with severe gusty winds and lightening cause loss of life and property even though they last for an hour or so. Forecasting of these severe weather events is highly essential due to their impact on socioeconomic conditions of affected regions. Kharagpur (22°30′ N, 87°20′ E) is in the region of Gangetic West Bengal (GWB) affected by high frequency of occurrence of thunde...

Convective Systems of the North Australian Monsoon

The climatology of convection over northern Australia and the surrounding oceans, based on six wet seasons (September–April), is derived from the Japanese Meteorological Agency Geostationary Meteorological Satellite-5 (GMS-5) IR1 channel for the years from 1995/96 to 2000/01. This is the first multiyear study of this kind. Clouds are identified at two cloud-top temperature thresholds: 235 and 2...

A New Algorithm for Classification of Tropical Convective Precipitating Clouds over North- Eastern Region of India

The North East (NE) region of India is prone to severe thunderstorm during pre monsoon period. These premonsoon precipitations are measured at Guwahati (26 17’ N, 91 77’ E) using a laser based particle size and velocity (PARSIVEL) disdrometer from 15 April to 31 May 2010 under a national field campaign named Severe Thunderstorm Observational and Regional Modeling (STORM). For the improved under...
